The challenge

A big book. A hard deadline.

236 pages of dense material. The Business Acumen Body of Knowledge is a reference for Army's Land Capability Division. It had grown into a long PowerPoint that was hard to navigate and inconsistent page to page.

A fixed review window. The design had to be finished in time for senior Army review, with approvals running through Fidarus, Army and our team.

A budget that ruled out the first quote. Another supplier's quote was well beyond what the project could spend.

What we did

Design for finding, not just reading.

We built a clear visual hierarchy and a small set of page templates, then applied them across the whole book so every page reads the same way.

Approach
01

Theme first, then scale

We designed and signed off 20 themed pages first, then applied the system across all 236 pages, swapping out low-resolution images along the way.

Approach
02

Built to navigate

Linked contents pages, a new foreword from Head Land Capability and a disclaimer page, so readers can jump straight to the section they need.

Approach
03

Three ways to use it

A password-locked presentation for briefings, an online PDF with working hyperlinks and a print PDF for bound copies.

Kick-off 11 September 2024, Army approval 11 October, final locked files delivered 15 October.

The results

Approved and in use.

  1. All 236 pages redesigned and delivered in five weeks.
  2. Approved by Army on 11 October 2024, with final files delivered four days later.
  3. Delivered as a locked presentation, an online PDF and a print PDF, with bound copies printed.
  4. In 2026 Army asked Fidarus to scope an update, treating the book as a living resource.
